A famous Edo tea master, Osugi-san is looking for a disciple and heir to someday take his place. Since he has often stopped at Onoji in the past, he asked Kojima-san if he could recommend anyone. Unfortunately, Kojima-san did...

The older brother of Inoue Genzaburo, he's the head of the family and a former student of the Shieikan. A bit sterner than Gen-san, but no less helpful.

Hotta-san is an old peddler that Toshi met when he first began selling Ishida Sanyaku. Since this can be dangerous work due to theives and ronin, Toshi usually travels in his company when selling medicine. Although he acts like Hotta-san is an annoyance, he's actually very attached to him and tries to look out for anyone bullying him. He prefers to call him "Old Man" rather than Hotta-san. The old peddler is much wiser than he seems and has taught Toshi a great deal about people.

Sato Nobu is the wife of Sato Hikogoro and Toshi's older sister. She was born in 1831. In many ways, Nobu is more like a mother than a sister to Toshi and she's often more aware of what he's feeling than he would like. A very kind person, Nobu has a softspot in her heart for young Souji as well. She'll often defend him from Toshi's wrath and laughs at his pranks.

Sato Hikogoro is a wealthy farmer in Tama and headman of Hino Village, not far from Ishida Village. His mother was the sister of Hijikata's father and she was the one who arranged Hikogoro's marriage to Nobu. He now has a young son named Toshinori. Sato is a kind-hearted person, but can be stern when he needs to be. Toshi has lived mostly in his home since he was 11 and the two get along very well together.

When Toshi was 14, Sato became concerned about bandits and theives in the area and built a dojo in his home. He invited Kondo Shusuke to teach swordsmanship there, so Shieikan members would often be visiting his house. Like Kojima, he becomes Kondo's sworn brother.

Kojima Shikanosuke is a wealthy farmer of Tama and the headman of Onoji Village, where the Shieikan members sometimes travel to teach swordsmanship in his garden. He's very distantly related to Hijikata's family and is Kondo Isami's sworn brother. Kojima is something of a scholar and has a vast library. He often lends people, including Toshi, books to read. He also invites masters of the tea ceremony, poetry, etc to stay at his home when they happen to pass through the region. A very cultured and intelligent man. He sometimes teaches calligraphy at the Shieikan in Edo and tries to be a support to the dojo in general.

Hijikata Tamejiro was born in 1812. Although he was the oldest son of the family, he was born blind and so could not inherit the Hijikata house. However Tamejiro doesn't let that get him down. He has a very upbeat personality and enjoys life. He never lets his handicap get in his way. (He once swam across a flooded river to get home!) To make a living, he plays the shamisen and recites poetry. He's the person who inspired Toshi to take up haiku. He might also be the person guilty of inspiring Toshi's love of women...

Hijikata Kiroku was born in 1819 and has been the head of the Hijikata family since their father's death the year Toshi was born. After their mother died when Toshi was six, he raised his younger brother. Hijikata was there until he was 11, when he was sent away to work in Edo. Something happened and he ran away, causing Kiroku to become angry. He only later found out why Toshi had run away. This has caused something of a rift between the two brothers and Toshi tends to be a little aloof towards Kiroku, whom he suspects resented having to care for a younger brother.

Kiroku for his part wants Toshi to give up on being a samurai. He constantly scolds his younger brother about not being practical and thinking of his future. In truth he is terrified that Toshi will end up being killed if he keeps pursuing his dream. He has a very stern personality and doesn't show his feelings much, yet in some respects he's similar to Tatsu Ichimura of PMK.

Hijikata Daisaku was born in 1828. He was later adopted by another family and changed his name to Kasuya Ryojyun. Since that family practiced medicine, he became a doctor and so treats all the Hijikata and Sato family when they are ill. He's very good at calligraphy. Daisaku is very kind and patient person. (Toshi still calls him by this name, much to his brother's annoyance.) Toshi has a very deep bond with him and often goes to him for advice.
